The Darebin Greens are calling on Martin Ferguson to change his opposition to ending Australia's trade in live animals and are requesting Mr Ferguson to support the Bill proposed by Greens MP Adam Bandt, which would see an immediate end to Australia's live export trade.

Greens members will be gathering signatures on a petition, and will also be encouraging Darebin residents to write to Mr Ferguson urging him to reconsider his position.

A sample letter is included below:

The Honourable Martin Ferguson

Dear Mr Fergsuon

I note that you are in favour of continuing Australia’s live animals export trade.

I'm writing regarding Greens MP Adam Bandt’s bill which is currently before Parliament and which proposes to end all live animal export. I urge you to support this bill.

This is an important opportunity for our country to make right a terrible shame that has hung over us for far too long. The live export industry has had three decades to address the brutal treatment of Australian animals in importing countries. Yet countless investigations in the Middle East and now in Indonesia have revealed that no substantial improvements have been achieved.

It is now abundantly clear to the public that Meat and Livestock Australia and the live exporters cannot be trusted to look out for animal welfare or be honest with the Australian public. It is time the government stopped investing its confidence and Australian tax payer dollars in this cruel industry.

The live export industry does not deserve another chance to get this right. In all honesty, they cannot get it right - long distance transport in itself is inherently cruel. The only way to inspire real welfare improvements in importing countries is to send a clear message that we will not supply animals to be treated cruelly.

The safety of millions of Australian animals is at stake. Your constituents are counting on you to make the right choice and ensure we never have to see those horrific images of cruelty to Australian animals on TV again.
